NYS Pension Planning for Couples Near Retirement
Your NYS pension is likely the biggest financial decision you’ll make at retirement, and the choices you make on paper are hard to undo. I help married couples in Central New York make those choices with the whole picture in front of them.
Choosing your payout option
NYSLRS offers a single-life option that pays the most each month but stops when you die. It also offers joint-and-survivor options that pay less but continue for your spouse, including pop-up versions and period-certain options. The right one depends on your spouse’s own income, your health, your savings, and any life insurance you have. Once your option is final, you generally can’t change it.
Your deferred comp (457) plan
The NYS Deferred Compensation Plan has an advantage most accounts don’t: after you leave service, withdrawals aren’t subject to the 10% early withdrawal penalty, whatever your age. That can make it the right bridge between retirement and Social Security.
Taxes
New York doesn’t tax your NYS pension or your Social Security, but the IRS does. That opens up planning room, including Roth conversions in the years before required minimum distributions start.
Health insurance and sick leave
Your years of service and unused sick leave can affect what you pay for health insurance in retirement. It belongs in the plan alongside your pension choice.
How I help
I’m a fee-only fiduciary in Chittenango. We sit down together, face to face if you like, and compare your options side by side before you sign anything.
